Olive Oil Class

Today I went to an olive oil factory to see how it's made. It was really neat to see all the work that goes in to the process. The place we went to grows their own olives but will also make oil out of other people's olives.

They actually use the entire olive - the leaves and stems are chopped up to use as fertilizer and the pits are ground up to use as fuel for all their machines.

The best part was the taste test. The Italians don't eat garlic bread like we do in the states. They put olive oil, oregano, salt and pepper on fresh baked bread. I can eat an entire loaf of bread like this.

I ended up buying a 5 liter jug of olive oil so that will hopefully last me an entire year. They told us that the average Italian family goes through 20 liters in a year and the record for this place was 100 liters for a family of 7.
